HOW TO BUILD A BRIDGE
2025, Installation, Nyloprint on polaroids of Google Earth satellite images, 85 × 1230 m

The work simulates the scenery along the flight path of a South Korean drone as claimed by the North Korean government in 2024. South Korea’s impeached Yoon Suk-yeol administration is suspected of having carried out several military provocations against North Korea in order to fabricate grounds for declaring martial law. Below the chronologically arranged photographs are the flight records of Matthias Rust, the West German teenager who travelled alone to the Soviet Union in a light aircraft. Rust testified that he wanted to build an imaginary bridge connecting the East and the West. These two border-crossing acts, born of entirely different motivations, recall Nikita Khrushchev’s saying: “Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river.”
