Volatile oils, ethanol, distilled water, archived texts from North Korean websites
The project stems from my personal experience of growing up 6 km from the border. The perfumes explore how political concepts shape our sense of distance and our understanding of place. Their formulas draw on texts, images, sounds, and lyrics that describe the scent of Pyongyang, archived from the now-defunct North Korean web. The first volume in the series imagines a springtime in Pyongyang in the year 2000, when the summit between the South and the North took place.
